I have noticed of late the trashing of Nora Frances Henderson by the Hamilton Spectator the very place where she held her first paying job. For man weeks they have laid silent which many in the community thought strange. Now all they seem to do is melign those who want to support Miss Henderson. The woman crossed a picket line in support of those locked in, she did not go inside to work on the line. Those inside at that time were not "scabs" but those who did not agree with forming a union. It is sad to think that some individuals appear proud that their wives spat on this lady only shows how ignorant and arrogant some people still appear to be. When is the Spectator going to start publishing Mr. Juravinski's role in strike breaking and locking out of the harness racers and staff when he owned and operated Flamboro Downs. That is right look it up, he was very pround of his ability to shall we say strike break? One is beginning to think that perhaps the Spectator is in cahoots with HHS with all their cheap shots.

I have lived in Hamilton 61 years, and have always known the Henderson Hospital as the "Henderson" To change the name now would be a tradedy. I think the Jurvinski's contribution to the medical comminity in Hamilton is more than admirable and they are truly kind, giving and wonderful people. Having said that, it scares me to think that the past is so easily disposed of. Change is good for any city in many areas but to change something that has been a part of our city and my growing up would be a very tragic occurance. I am all for change, but somethings need to reamin the same. How much longer will the board of HHSC be able to do do anything they please. They just have not taken into consideration the feelings of the people who came before them and the pride we feel for our city. I am willing to bet that the majority of them are not even from Hamilton and are under 50 years of age and have no concept of who Nora Henderon really was. I encourage you to continue with your endeavour to keep the name of the hospital and not make Nora Hendeson an afterthought.

As a veteran who spent many hours at the Henderson when my wife was sick I hate that we are supposed to have no say in this matter.Who do the HHSB think they are?We taxpayers have paid with our taxes for most of this hospital and its many extentions over the years and we want,no,we DEMAND that there will be no changes to the name of our beloved HENDERSON HOSPITAL.If the board want a fight over this,so be it,we have not even started yet.come down off your high horses and be big enough to admit YOU ARE WRONG.Keep the same name.

I've been a resident of hamilton for 50 years and as long as I have lived here I have always used the full title "The Nora Francis Henderson Hospital" which I feel is the right and correct title. It pleased me that a woman received this honour and especially that long ago. I think it is very generous of the Juravinski's and they deserve recognition.
If this can be done without the deletion of the Henderson title I would think that would be respectful of both people.

Dear reader
Until injured on the job at Chedoke Hos and forced onto disability by my employer I worked for HHSC for near 15 yrs. While at Chedoke I spent time as a union rep at the time of the ER. closing. My employer had us out removing hospital signage at midnight the day of closure even befor the last shift had left the ER. In thier haste and through lack of cosultation the end of Hospital status at Chedoke would have resulted in the forfiture of lands back to orignal beifators. The Hospital did a quick turn and back up go the signs. Now the Henderson name change and (surprise ) no consultation with the public or thier representitives. I have been witness to the arogance with wich the administration operates and pose another queestion! Everyone that works at MUMC and the admin that I run into is refering to Mac. as the "Mcmaster Childrens Hospital" do we know for a fact that the status of MUMC has'nt already changed and we have'nt been informed. The hospital has a way of quietly making decisions and then slowly removing services till there is little enough left to fight over. Thus the work done the change has been made and the public never saw it coming. The unions have been the only check over the years to raise red flags. When will the ambudsman of Ontario be given control over this monopoly that so greatly affects our community life and health? These are personal opinions and observations and as such represent or slander no one. No malice intended.

Yours Truly

As a taxpayer in Hamilton for over 50 years I strongly object to name change of our Mountain Hospital. Surely Mr. Juravinski should be happy with the large wing that is named after him. I object strongly to the fact that the public was not consulted before any name change was suggested after all the taxpayers have already poured milllions of dollars into this hospital.

Please keep the current name of the hospital. To change it from Henderson would be disrespectful to Nora Frances Henderson's legacy.

We agree completly with your comments, the HHS board should not be able to change the name of a publicly funded facility without the input of the tax payers, the Juavinski name is on the cancer centre for all to see can they not be content with that, as for the Hederson Hospital no matter what name they put on the building it will always be the Henderson to us.

How can a donation of one tenth the cost of a two hundred million project, funded by taxpayers, be allowed to take all the credit??? I suggest they be given ten percent of the project. They could have a department dedicated to them, the one that sanitizes bedpans.

please retain the Henderson name. Nora Frances Henderson contributed to the humanitarian wealth of Hamilton and her name should not be erased by the cold hard cash of others.

We do not want to lose the Henderson Legacy in a game of financial musical chairs. A recognition of and respect for past achievements is important to a true understanding of the Present.

I would like to support the initiative to continue the name Henderson General Hospital and to suggest that the wing and acknowledgement area in the hospital previously suggested to honour Nora Henderson be used to honour the Juravinskis.

HAVING FOUGHT HARD FOR THE hOSPITAL TO REMAIN WHERE IT IS, I FIND IT TOTALLY OUTRAGEIOUS THAT THE CANCER CENTRE WAS NOT ENOUGH RECOGNITION FOR THE DONATIONS RECEIVED AND THAT A WELL KNOWN NAME AND LANDMARK WILL BE WIPED FROM THE HOSPITAL.tHE UN INFORMED BOARD MEMBERS ,OBVIOUSLY FROM OUTSIDE THE AREA,WHO MADE THIS DECISION BEHIND CLOSED DOORS SHOULD HANG THEIR HEADS IN SHAME,BUT I DOUBT THEY HAVE ANY.

I, for one, feel that the Henderson should keep its original name. Donating money should not take preference over a building that has always had the name "Henderson" I agree with Pat Saunders. This re-naming game should not be happening. My opinion is to keep the original name and give the Jurvanski's a wing to call their own. Is nothing sacred anymore? How many buildings does one couple need to have their name on? Lets be realistic and be proud of Nora Henderson for her fantastic contribution to Hamilton and area. Keep the name please!

Do not change the name. The name represent the person who did all the work to make this facility possible.

I am with the majority of mountain residents in the desire to keep the Henderson name on the renewed hospital. When will we have a mass rally to make our wishes known?

It is unfortunate that the HHS felt the need to change the name of Henderson Hospital without taxpayers input since we fought hard to keep this very important institution open for the need of everyone in the Hamilton and surrounding area...keep the Henderson's name for all of us.

My mother had great respect for the integrity and courage displayed by Nora at a time in history when womens rights were not at the forefront, politically or morally. It does not surprise me that her accomplishments would be less important than money. It makes a statement that defines our current societal values and the economic distress which plagues our hospitals. Certainly, the millions offered to our city by the Juravinskis is so necessary and will rewrite the quality of health care in our community, but, the true philanthropist would not want to usurp the name of Nora Francis Henderson. I think it is a gross injustice and many feel as I do. I feel also that the Juravinskis, despite their huge contribution, unfortunately, will not be as popular or as appreciatd as they should be because of the impression that many have that they have purposefully displaced our beloved Nora to the archives.

We agree with your opinion Terry. It is also noted that the Ont. Cancer Clinic next to Henderson Hosp. already has the Juravinski name on it as well as on a wing of St Josephs Hosp. this should be enough. Ham. Health Sciences Board needs to take into consideration that others have generously donated & would graciously not expect their names to be "up in lights" Input from the taxpayers would have been appreciated before this decision was made.

Enter comments here! Nora Frances Henderson earned the honour of having the hospital named after her. Charles Juravinski has been generous with cash, may he now show generosity of spirit and not take away her name. Recognition of his donations could be made at the Henderson in perhaps naming a Wing after him, as they do at St. Joseph's Hospital. Another option, perhaps the "Juravinski General" on Barton Street.
